Welcome to our Kindergarten Program at Roland Michener Elementary! The first few days with new routines can be challenging and I thank you for your patience. I am eager to get to know you and your child as we look forward to an exciting year of learning and growing together.
Program
Our Kindergarten Program runs Monday to Friday from 8:25am to 11:05am. Every day we will learn and develop new skills through play and a variety of hands-on activities. Regularly scheduled activities are: Library, Music, Phys Ed and Buddies. The focus of Kindergarten is to develop foundational skills for future schooling i.e. learning routines, developing language & math skills, fine & gross motor skills etc.
Entry
Kindergarten students will be entering the school through the doors closest to the playground and will be greeted by their teacher. We will also be exiting through the same doors at the end of the day. Please let me know who will be picking your child up from school each day. If there are days when you need to pick your child up early from school, please inform me and sign your child out in the office (CBE policy requirement). Sometimes children tell us that their parent is picking them up when in fact we have had no communication to tell us so. We cannot take your child’s word on this; this communication must come directly from you. If your child will be absent, please phone or email the office (you may cc Ms. Revel).
Communication
A plastic communication folder will be given to your child later this week to assist with information and work traveling back and forth from home. We ask that you check this folder for notices daily and send it back to school the next day. It will be checked in the classroom daily for forms or parent notes. It is your child’s responsibility to bring this folder into the class each day and place it in the basket near the front of the classroom.
Email is a preferred form of communication at RMS. We email parents about events, meetings, calendar updates and may use it to discuss personal situations as they arise. Please check in at the office to sign up for emails if you haven’t already.
Texting is also used by the office to update parents about events, meetings, fundraising, pick-ups and last minutes changes (i.e. field trip bus running late). Please register at the office for texting.
Needs and Belongings
A big part of kindergarten is learning to be independent, however, personal items can be misplaced. Please make sure that you LABEL EVERY ITEM of your child’s before sending it to school with them to prevent the loss or mix up of clothing, shoes and other items.
A Few Sample Snack Menu Plans:
- Apple & Orange Slices with a cheese stick
- Veggies, dip & bread sticks
- Small banana muffins & a yogurt drink
- Cheese, cracker and slice of cantaloupe
- Yogurt tubes & a graham cracker
- Fruit salad
- Toasted pita chips & hummus
Remember to keep the choices healthy. Healthy snacks fuel your child’s mind for optimal learning!
**Note: We have peanut & nut allergies among the children at Roland Michener in Kindergarten and in our larger school population of both students and staff, therefore please do not send any foods that may contain peanuts, nuts, peanut butter or peanut oil.
Thank you!

A big part of kindergarten is learning to be independent, however, personal items can be misplaced. Please make sure that you LABEL EVERY ITEM of your child’s before sending it to school with them to prevent the loss or mix up of clothing, shoes and other items.
- Running Shoes (no dress shoes please): All children require a pair of running shoes with VELCRO fasteners to be left at school. We have the expectation that all students remove their outdoor footwear upon entering and independently change into their indoor shoes.
- Extra Clothing: It is beneficial for all children to carry an alternate set of clothes in their backpacks (pants, socks and underwear) to change into in the event of an accident. Please place these items in a plastic bag in their backpacks.
- Backpacks: There are often important notices sent home. Children are required to have a backpack to carry things back and forth. Please ensure that it is big enough to hold 8 ½ x 11” papers and a large sized library book.
- Lunchbox: Starting Monday, August 21st, please provide your child with a simple snack in a lunch kit to be eaten at school. We will often have a snack around 10:00am (please make sure your child has a big, healthy breakfast so they can focus on their learning before snack time). Good nutrition is essential and we ask that your child bring a filled water bottle each day (no juice please).
